For a Guernsey holiday in a hotel that offers a superb island view, warm and welcoming hospitality and quaint charm – Le Chalet hotel in Fermain Valley, on the edge of St Peter Port is a perfect choice.
This eclectic Guernsey hotel is quite unique both in its structure (the name is a giveaway) and its history. It was the first building in Guernsey to benefit from the commercial delivery of electricity, it once was a holiday home for Lillie Langtry and the choice for SS headquarters during the occupation of Guernsey during WWII. Manager Robert Steen is mein host personified and makes a point of meeting and greeting every single guest.
Le Chalet offers 39 bedrooms, many enjoying views down the valley to the sea and the vista takes in the beautiful Fermain Bay and the neighbouring islands of Sark and in the distance, Jersey. A short walk down the forested valley via hidden gardens takes you to the beach and the coastal path and within half an hour you can be in the capital of St Peter Port. Just outside the hotel is the tallest tree on the island – an ancient Sequoia and a stream tinkles downhill providing delightful natural surroundings. The large terrace is a wonderful spot to enjoy lunch, dinner or just to relax with a drink or afternoon tea.
For a Guernsey hotel Le Chalet offers generous parking though it has to be said that a car is not a necessity on this island. Aside from a very affordable bus service, the island can be easily explored on foot or on cycle – every road on Guernsey is safe for cyclists and it is the best way to traverse many of the tiny country lanes that crisscross the island.
Whilst its sister island of Jersey may have garnered much of the attention over the years, the island of Guernsey – that little bit smaller but with a definite air of sophistication is coming into its own and it is acknowledged by the many returning visitors that a Guernsey holiday is definitely a memorable one.
