Surrey, United Kingdom (23rd May, 2012) – Altius Consulting, a leading Business Intelligence and Enterprise Performance Management consultancy based in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the United States, showcases new and innovative ways to interrogate and gain insights from Digital Jersey Survey data.
Digital Jersey started life as a LinkedIn group, bringing together technology professionals with links to Jersey in the Channel Islands. Following discussions amongst the group, a survey was carried out in late 2011 which aimed to profile the technology companies based on the island and to gather their views on what Jersey needed to do to enhance, build and grow the many excellent IT firms based there. Questions based around the role Government should play in this also arose.
After releasing the survey results the Founder of Digital Jersey, Luke Szkudlarek, made the raw data available and challenged the IT community to come up with new and innovative ways to gain insights from the data.
Commenting on the survey and Altius Consulting’s subsequent involvement, Principal Consultant, John Gamble explained: “We participated in the survey last year and could see what the Digital Jersey survey was trying to achieve, but felt that some of the insights in the data could perhaps be lost through traditional presentation methods. Being a Microsoft and Oracle Gold Business Intelligence Partner, we have access to many advanced analysis and visualisation technologies, and felt that the survey results could be better represented using these.
“The Pivot method from Microsoft, as used in the website, allows users to visualise and interact with the data and use one or more questions to act as filters to another. In this way we can filter the survey results based on a particular size of company, or where companies are located.”
Commenting on the link with Highlands College, John explains: “One of the aims of Digital Jersey is to promote Jersey as an IT centre of excellence, and this includes the education sector being supported by the technology sector. We are fortunate to have links with Highlands and we have a degree student, Jonathan Holmes, on placement with us. What you see on the website was built by Jonathan with support from Altius and E-Scape as needed. Overall, we’re delighted with the outcome and responses to the new visualisation.”
Luke Szkudlarek of Digital Jersey and E-Scape said: “I’d like to thank John, Jonathan and the whole team at Altius for taking up the challenge and working on this visualisation. As digital technology creeps into every aspect of our lives, data becomes more important. Finding new ways to look at and present data of any kind helps us to engage with it, and learn more about ourselves and the world around us.”
