Couples are facing a choice between “romance or penance” this Valentine’s Day as it coincides with Ash Wednesday while one Catholic bishop has urged them to forgo a romantic meal and wear ashes instead.
As he blessed two engaged couples at St Valentine’s Shrine at Whitefriar Street Church in Dublin yesterday, Bishop Denis Nulty said they were gathered on Monday instead of Wednesday due to the clash of dates between St Valentine’s feast day and Ash Wednesday, a traditional day of fasting and penance in the Catholic Church.
