Cheshire, United Kingdom (23rd January) – Free betting comparison website Chips.co.uk has reiterated its stance towards responsible gambling in light of the news that the UK Government has ruled out a crack down on fixed odds betting terminals (FOBTs) in high street bookmakers.
The machines have been the topic of many discussions in recent years, with campaign groups citing them as a possible cause of gambling addiction amongst vulnerable people across the country. The Campaign for Fairer Gambling lobbied, last year, for FOBTs to be banned from brick and mortar bookmakers’ shops with immediate effect. The organisation believes that the machines are too addictive and should be confined to casinos rather than betting shops.
However, culture minister Hugh Robertson has stated that there is little evidence to support the claim that FOBTs cause serious gambling addiction. Robertson said that new evidence would need to be gathered before any ban would be entertained. FOBTs are machines that allow users to place bets on a variety of ‘casino style’ games such as blackjack and roulette with fixed odds. Maximum stakes of £100 can be placed, whilst the maximum payout is £500.
