Adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin, Cabaret debuted on Broadway in 1966; it became a hit, with a staggering 1,165 performances in its first run. The success of the show led to a film adaptation in 1972, starring Liza Minnelli and Michael York, which in turn was a huge success, winning eight Academy Awards in 1973. Over the following decades, Cabaret has continued to enjoy great popularity, with various Broadway and London revivals drawing in large audiences and scooping various prestigious awards, including twelve Tony Awards and three Laurence Olivier Awards.
This new version is directed by Rufus Norris, and will star internationally-renowned singer/songwriter Will Young – in his debut stage-musical appearance – as Emcee. Alongside him, former EastEnders star Michelle Ryan takes on the iconic role of Sally Bowles, the Kit Kat Club’s dazzling cabaret performer. The story follows Sally’s relationship with young American writer Cliff Bradshaw, as Berlin slowly falls under the shadow of the Nazis. Cabaret will open at London’s Savoy Theatre on the 3rd of October 2012, and will run until the 19th of January 2013.
