England – 14/12/2011– Amateur gardeners are taking hydroponics to their hearts giving every hydroponics shop a great new opportunity
Until fairly recently the main customers of your average hydroponics shop were commercial farmers. Occasionally, they would get interest from a city restaurant who wanted to grow their own salads. Some have even sold systems to zoos who need to grow specialist vegetables for their animals.
However, a new market is now emerging in the form of hobby gardeners. It has all come off the back of the renewed interest people have in growing their own food. However, the current economic climate has generated even more interest as people without a garden even want to get involved in growing their own vegetables in an effort to save money on food. Add to those people interested in growing the healthiest vegetables possible and you have a wave of people all keen to get started with hydroponics.
Getting Started With Hydroponics
Many people do not realise just how little space they actually need to get started with hydroponics. Once they do they are keen to give it a go. Even people who have no outside space can grow using hydroponics and a grow light.
All you need is some starter cubes made of Rockwool, coconut husk, or filled with gravel. You also need healthy seedlings or seeds, water and the correct plant nutrients for the plants that you are planning to buy. You also need a way of checking the PH of the water. If you are growing low plants they will not need support however if you are growing tomatoes or other tall plants you do need to provide them with a frame to provide them with support.
It is possible to grow plants using hydroponics on your window sill. Some people grow their own herbs and do so in their kitchen.
My Hydroponics Shop has found that providing simple advice on their website has fuelled their business. People who come to them with a general interest end up buying the hydroponics kit they need to get started.
