Legendary late Iveragh musician and singer Seán Garvey will be the toast of Uíbh Ráthach’s Éigse na Brídeoige festival on the bank-holiday weekend as the bilingual celebration, now well into its fourth decade, returns.
he Cahersiveen man died last May but left a powerful musical legacy, taking the 2006 TG4 Traditional Singer of the Year prize among many other awards.
This year’s Éigse takes place in and around the South Kerry Gaeltacht from February 3 to 5, and friends and family of Seán’s will take part in festivities over the three days.
One of these friends, renowned musician Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich, will officially open the Éigse after 8pm in Halla an Phobail Cathair Dónall (Caherdaniel Community Hall), and Ríonach Uí Ógáin will make a presentation on “the recorded heritage of Seán Garvey” on the same night in the same venue.
A night of song will continue from 10pm at the Blind Piper in Caherdaniel. A bus will depart from The Villa Waterville at 7.30pm and will return from The Blind Piper at 11.30pm, and this is bookable by phoning (087) 293 1463.
A panel of Seán’s friends will reminisce on his life from 10.30 the following morning in Halla an Phobail, Baile ‘n Sceilg (Ballinskelligs Community Hall), and at 8pm, Seán’s son, Seán Óg, will be among a star-studded line-up for a concert at the same venue.
A Sunday-night concert at Ionad na Dromoda (Dromid Community Centre) at 8pm and a 10pm session at the Inny Tavern will round off the weekend, which will include many more events aside from these highlights.
“Seán Garvey was recognised as one of the ‘greats’ of the singing tradition in Ireland,” said Fíona de Buis of the significance of this year’s event. “When Seán died in May 2022, the committee of Éigse na Brídeoige decided to dedicate Éigse 2023 to his memory.
“The Éigse line-up includes some of Ireland’s best exponents of traditional music – musical friends from Scotland and all over Ireland who were all happy to come to Iveragh, Seán’s homeplace, to celebrate him in music and song.”
