Birmingham, United Kingdom (06 September, 2011) – Green Room Retail, leading expert providers of retail solutions including retail design, point-of-purchase, shop-in-shop and flagship store design, have designed and delivered action sports, art, music and street culture brand Vans’ first pop-up shop at Spitalfields Market, London.
The store – designed and delivered by retail design practice Green Room – coincides with the “Vans Downtown Showdown”, an international skate event in Old Spitalfields Market on August 20th, and seeks to offer Vans fans a unique and time limited brand experience.
This temporary space is located in a former art gallery on Brushfield Street and shares the same ‘Jack the Ripper’ theme as the Vans Downtown Showdown event. Reminiscent of the traditional ‘spit and sawdust’ pub of the Victorian era, props sourced by Green Room’s team include barrels, a piano, antique hat stand, cabinets, lanterns and modesty screens. The store is a unique opportunity for the Vans brand to show its ‘darker’ side in the developing and vibrant Shoreditch district of London. The theme can be felt throughout the store and its proximity to the famous Ten Bells Pub adds to the overall ‘Jack the Ripper’ experience.
This is the first Vans standalone retail environment timed to a skate competition and consumers can expect all of the excitement before, during and after the event. The store will be open for just four weeks and will offer the very best of Vans, with a fully comprehensive range of footwear, apparel and accessories for Men, Women and Youth, as well as lines exclusive to the event.
The Vans Downtown Showdown will see some of the leading skateboard teams in Europe compete for a €50,000 purse. Twelve of the best skate teams will be competing at the historic Old Spitalfields Market for their chance to take part in a contest renowned to test skill, flare and creativity. Far removed from the usual format of any other skateboarding competition – the event will take place on special customised ramps, which are all designed by the invited Teams themselves. Make sure you catch International Pros Skateboarders Geoff Rowley, Dustin Dollin and Anthony Van Engelen and Skateboard legend Tony Alva at one of the signings.
